In orbit around Mercury, 0.31 to 0.47 AU from the Sun
BepiColombo spent eight years and nine planetary flybys getting to Mercury, and arrives as two spacecraft stacked together. Mio is the smaller one, an octagonal drum that spins fifteen times a minute and carries a magnetometer on a mast and a plasma package that counts the particles flowing past. In December 2026 it separates from its European partner and settles into a long, looping orbit that takes it far out into the solar wind on every pass. From April 2027 it becomes the innermost fixed station in the inner solar system, a third of the way from the Sun to Earth, sampling the wind and every CME shock that crosses it.
Feeds: nothing live, and nothing planned. Its science data is released about six months after it is taken, so the first public measurements from Mercury orbit arrive in late 2027. When they do, they give the historical replays a second measured point on each CME's journey and a check on the fluid model's inner region that no Earth data can provide. With a few years of crossings it may also reveal a bias worth correcting, but the sample will be too small to tune on. Until then it is on the Spacecraft layer, riding with Mercury, so you can see when a CME sweeps over it.
